A bit of history
The neighborhood takes its name from the rocky headland that juts into the river at the southern tip of the city. For much of the 19th century, it was an area of country estates and open countryside, far from the city center.
In 1876, the Punta Brava Lighthouse was inaugurated; it is still in operation today and is one of the neighborhood’s landmarks. In the early 20th century, the old Punta Carretas prison was built; after it closed, it was converted and, since 1994, has housed the Punta Carretas Shopping Center, while retaining its original facade.
With the opening of the Rambla and the city’s expansion eastward, Punta Carretas established itself as an upscale residential neighborhood.
